At the 1997 Tokyo Auto Show BMW unveiled a concept car called the Z7. The Z7 was designed as a celebration of the BMW 507 that had been produced between 1956-1959. The Z8 arrived two years later. Based on the Z7 design it was always intended to be a limited edition vehicle and, in total, only 5,703 were ever made. Each car was constructed and finished by hand. With only a limited production planned BMW pledged to stockpile fifty years worth of spare parts for Z8 owners.
