As the first compact, crossover SUV from Toyota introduced in Japan and Europe, the Rav4 was designed for customers who want an automobile that features the benefits of an SUV with the fuel-efficiency and maneuverability of a smaller car. The name RAV4 stands for “Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive.” The first version was based on the Toyota Corolla infrastructure, and was initially available in two and four-door variants. The United States version featured front-wheel and all-wheel drive options with a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. Although technically still part of the first generation of Toyota Rav4, the vehicle was slightly restyled in 1998 to add a soft-top two door version. The next versions of the Toyota Rav4 were introduced in 2000 with the Edge (basic) and Cruiser (high-end) models. Both were available with either three or five-doors. The greatest difference was the appearance as the Edge had unpainted dark grey bumpers and steel rims while the Cruiser models featured painted bumpers and alloy wheels. In 2006 the Toyota Rav4 was completely remodeled featuring a new platform and an electric power-steering system. The most recent versions are available with a short and long wheelbase, in a 6-speed or 5-speed manual or 6-speed, 5-speed and 4-speed automatic transmission.
