In 1998 Volkswagen brought the Beetle into the modern market with a fresh design and standard modern features. The New Beetle retains the retro bubble-like shape of the original model, but the biggest change is with the engine, now placed at the front of the vehicle powering the front wheels, allowing for storage in the trunk. The little car is a three-door hatchback, but there are also convertible versions available. Modern demands also ensure that safety features of the New Beetle increased from the original, with driver and passenger front and side airbags becoming a standard on all models from 2004. Additionally, the New Beetle is fitted with anti-lock brakes. The base model has a 2.0L engine whilst the sportier TDI, Turbo, Turbo S and Sports models have turbo-charged 1.8L or 1.9L engines. The standard transmission on the New Beetle is 5-speed automatic, although some can be found with a 6-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift gate.
