The Volvo V40 was introduced to the market in 1995, and is still being manufactured today. The V40 was the first Volvo to be developed under the direction of British designer Peter Horbury. Described as a “sporty feeling” station wagon, the model broke with the traditional mold of Volvo station wagons; the “boxy” look of previous Volvo station wagon models was blown away with the V40’s soft curves and sloping rear hatchback. However, the Volvo V40 was and still is instantly recognizable as a Volvo with its V-shaped hood and prominent grille.
The V40 is available with a large choice of engines ranging from the entry level 1.6 liter to a powerful 2.0 liter 200 horsepower producing unit in the T4. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, with a five-speed automatic option available on versions with the 1.8 liter and larger engines.
With the V40, Volvo managed to produce a car that, while being far removed from their traditional station wagon, did not sacrifice the safety, quality and versatility for which Volvos are renowned.
