Follow these steps to ensure a smooth, legal transfer of vehicle ownership in Missouri.

1. Verify Your Title

Before selling your vehicle in Missouri, confirm that the title is in your name and free of errors. If the title is lost or damaged, request a duplicate through the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) before selling.

2. Sign the Title Correctly

Complete the following fields in the assignment area on the back of the Missouri title. Note that the back also contains assignment areas marked for use by registered dealers only — do not use those.  

       
  • Seller’s Signature: Sign in the seller’s signature field. Every owner listed on the face of the title must sign. Missouri does not require these signatures to be notarized.
  • Printed Name of Seller: Hand-print your name on the line below your signature, exactly as it appears on the face of the title.
  • Odometer Disclosure: Record the exact mileage at the time of sale — whole miles only, no tenths. Federal law requires disclosure on model year 2011 and newer vehicles until the vehicle is 20 years old; model year 2010 and older vehicles are now exempt. Only check a box if a 5-digit odometer has rolled past 100,000 miles, or if the reading is not the actual mileage.
  • Buyer’s Name and Address: Enter the full legal name, signature, and address of the buyer.
  • Date of Sale: Enter the date the vehicle is sold.
  • Sale Price: Write the agreed-upon sale price. If there is no trade-in, the net price is the same as the sale price.

Important: Use blue or black ink only. You may not use correction fluid (white-out) or erase marks from the title — any alteration may void it. What you disclose also determines the mileage brand printed on the buyer’s new title.

3. Address Any Liens

If a lien is shown on the face of your title, the lienholder must release it. Since July 1, 2003, Missouri lien releases can no longer be signed on the face of the title — the lienholder must provide a separate notarized release, either Form 4809 or a notarized release on the lienholder’s letterhead.

4. Provide a Bill of Sale

Missouri recommends a Bill of Sale (Form 1957) for transactions, especially if the buyer needs to show proof of purchase when registering the vehicle.

5. Remove License Plates

In Missouri, license plates stay with the seller. Remove your plates before the purchaser takes possession of the vehicle, whether they are valid or expired. You may transfer the plates to another vehicle you own or return them to the DOR.
